Why Atabeira?

Atabeira is the goddess of the water, fertility, and birth. Atabeira is a representation of both: our Latinx culture and women. It serves as inspiration to accomplish our goals: Support individuals and families that go through perinatal depression, empower them, and improve their quality of life.

Our friendship and commitment to serve the community

Edith and Arlene have been friends for over 28 years. They graduated from high school, took different paths, and eventually both moved to San Antonio, TX. Edith and Arlene always knew they would like to collaborate together, as they have supported and complemented each other throughout the years. Edith has an entrepreneurial spirit and a wealth of technology knowledge, while Arlene is a passionate community educator and advocate.

Working on developing Atabeira Wellness has been a goal and a dream come true. Arlene’s PPD journey increased our awareness about the stigma involving parenthood and mental health issues. It was difficult to navigate the system and find adequate help. As a result, some of our goals include increasing awareness and fostering an environment of compassion, understanding, and advocacy for anyone going through mental health issues including Postpartum Depression and related conditions.

We assure you, with help and support, you can get through it.

Arlene F. Serrano, PhD

I am a bilingual Latina, mom, ARMY veteran wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. I am an educator and published author with over 13 years of experience in K-12, community and higher education.  I have worked with families, adults with disabilities, refugees, and Hispanic immigrants among other populations. I have been committed to development of educational opportunities for marginalized populations in the local community.

I am also a survivor of Postpartum Depression. I became a biological mama at 39 years old. I thought I would never have children and I got pregnant in March 2018, one month after my dad passed unexpectedly. My son came as a surprise to fill our life with happiness and love. I did my best to keep a positive mindset, although there were so many unexpected changes happening simultaneously. After going through this process, I have realized that I was experiencing some anxiety before giving birth. The first weeks after my son was born, I felt shaky and was not able to sleep or eat. Soon after that, I was having crying episodes, ongoing anxiety, obsessive thoughts and worries. 4 weeks after delivery, I was diagnosed with PPD, PPA, and OCD. It has been a recovery journey and I am grateful for the support I have received from many people. This experience has inspired me to help other individuals going through a similar process. Together, we can create a better postpartum experience for parents and families.

Edith Rosa

My name is Edith Rosa. I have lived in Texas for the last 12 years. I am an entrepreneur, photographer, and silversmith. I hold a bachelor's degree in Communications, and have completed studies in culinary arts and photography. I am compassionate, understanding, and a firm believer in empowering others. I do my best to keep a positive mindset and look at the silver lining. I firmly believe in building community by fostering relationships and collaborating with others.

Helping individuals to overcome postpartum depression and other mental health issues is a cause dear to my heart. Observing my friend going through postpartum depression was a life changing experience. She had one of the most precious moments in her life as she became a mom but with that came her postpartum depression journey. It was difficult to navigate the system and start the journey to recovery.

After researching the stories of other individuals going through a similar experience, it became apparent the need to normalize mental health issues and streamline mental health care. It is also essential to assist women in becoming more independent and provide a path to self-sufficiency. I look forward to foster partnerships, contribute to the community, and empower families. By fostering these partnerships, I also look forward to the empowerment of women by owning small businesses and being confident in their talents and identities.
